Appeal following distraction burglaries in Potters Bar

Police are appealing for information and ask people to be vigilant following two distraction burglaries in Potters Bar today (Wednesday, September 9).

It’s believed a man targeted two addresses in the area at around 9am. The man, described as being white, of slim build with short dark hair and aged in his 20s, claimed to be working on behalf of a charity.

He was wearing dark clothing, had a folder with him and said that the residents’ neighbour had won a prize and that he required an envelope for money to be placed into.

The man gained access to both houses and stole a black suede jewellery box from one of the properties.

Officers from the specialist unit, Operation Manhunt, who investigate distraction burglary and other crimes committed against the elderly, are investigating this crime.

Detective Constable Jason Tinsey, from Operation Manhunt, is leading the investigation. He said: “The victims in these incidents were elderly and vulnerable. I would urge anyone with elderly neighbours to be particularly vigilant and check in with them to see if they’re ok.

“We are not revealing the exact location where the offences took place, however if anyone believes they have seen anyone matching the descriptions above acting suspiciously today, I would urge them to get in touch with police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Operation Manhunt via the non-emergency number 101.

If you have any information about this incident you can also contact the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through their Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
