Haringey Borough midweek game

AFC HORNCHURCH V HARINGEY BOROUGH

Ryman League Division One North 16th August 2016 Bridge Avenue, Hornchurch

Haringey Borough played last season’s play-off finalists on a high after their opening day win v Dereham but left AFC Hornchurch with a defeat and more injury worries, after a bruising battle that left Anthony McDonald and Rusrdi Kay being substituted before the second half kicked off.

With Jorge Djassi-Sambu being replaced by Dewayne Clarke, the only other change was Ross Dedman coming in for Anton Blackwood in defence.

Both sides started brightly but it was Haringey who tested the keeper first, when a Kay free kick had to be punched clear with the Borough forwards converging. Dean Fenton had a header saved and various missed chances at both ends kept the game goalless.

Then on 35 minutes, a bad tackle on McDonald resulting on him receiving lengthy treatment, before being replaced by Gregory Moorse-McDougall. The resulting free-kick was swung in and only needed a touch to divert it goal wards.

Just before half-time Kay received a late challenge and even though he finished the half he was replaced by Ishmail Kamara before the second half kicked off.

Hornchurch opened the scoring on 55 minutes, when a corner was flicked on and AFC’s Elliot Styles headed home from a couple of yards out. AFC should have doubled their lead 5 minutes later, when a quick break-out ended with Alex Bentley shooting over.

Then in the space of 10 minutes Haringey had the lead. Christopher Benjamin doubled his goals for the season when on 68 minutes touched home a Daniel Aristidou cross from the right wing and then touched home a cross from Joshua Willer from the left.

The lead didn’t last long, when on their next attack Hornchurch forced a corner which was headed home from Nathan Cooper, after a Harry Palmer save. Both sides went for the win but for the third time in the match Haringey were undone from a corner. Again Styles heading in from close range.

AFC Hornchurch held out until the final whistle, which was a bit unfair on Haringey who deserved at least a point.

On Saturday 20th, the FAC comes to town, with a home game v Barkingside kick off 3.00. All are welcome.

Haringey’s season-tickets are not valid for this game, but you can still apply for one on the day so speak to anyone at the club or get in touch for details.
