Aid to Gaza via Amalthea shipped on Monday from Limassol port

A 1,200-ton (1,191 pallet) shipment of humanitarian aid, including food and clothing, left the port of Limassol, Cyprus on Monday, in the framework of the Amalthea humanitarian project initiated by the Cyprus Republic.

The humanitarian cargo will be transported through the port of Ashdod without additional security checks and will be distributed to the people of Gaza, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The aid is a donation from the government of Singapore, as well as international humanitarian organizations based in Kuwait and the United States.

The MFA says that the implementation of the Amalthea continues with the next phase aiming to transport additional humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza.

The maritime humanitarian corridor operates as a complementary route with the aim of relieving civilians and contributing to meeting urgent needs, the Ministry said.

It also pointed out that Cyprus infrastructure remains at the disposal of the international community for the collection, storage, safe inspection and dispatch of humanitarian aid. The initiative has multiple operational applications with possibilities for readjustment.

The Republic of Cyprus expressed its gratitude to the partners of this collective effort and clarified that the Cyprus – Ashdod – Gaza route is expected to be organized through the supervisory Mechanism of UN-2720 for operational coordination of the process, ensuring the smooth cooperation of all parties involved.

The MFA also said that Cyprus will consistently continue to contribute constructively as a country in the region, promoting and implementing humanitarian initiatives to support the effort for regional stability and security.
