Cyprus registered 33,640 beehives on agricultural holdings in 2023, compared with 38,130 in 2020, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday.
At EU level, 9.4 million bee colonies were recorded on farms in 2023, a figure that reflects only part of the total number of beehives, as the relevant statistics include exclusively those located on agricultural holdings. Compared with 2020, this number increased by 1.3 million, marking a 16% rise from 8.1 million.
According to the same data, Italy has the highest number of beehives on farms among Member States, with almost 1.9 million in 2023. It is followed by Romania with 1.7 million, Greece with 1.2 million, and Bulgaria with 1.0 million.
