Cypriot Cabinet Secretary sees small window of opportunity for the Cyprus problem

A small window of opportunity for the Cyprus problem has opened, Secretary to the Council of Ministers Theodosis Tsiolas said on Sunday, noting that the Greek Cypriot leadership and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades spare no effort to achieve a just and viable settlement.

Tsiolas, who was speaking during a memorial service, in Frenaros, Famagusta District, acknowledged at the same time that there hasn`t been any tangible gesture on the part of Turkey yet.

“It is a fact that Turkey has not proceeded yet with any substantial or tangible actions and only limits itself to statements in support of the dialogue,” he noted.

Turkey needs to prove its real intentions over Cyprus, Tsiolas noted, and added that Cyprus needs to persuade Ankara over the great opportunities that peace in Cyprus will bring about.

The Greek Cypriot side will not stop struggling for a settlement, the soonest possible, that will respond to our expectations, while taking into consideration the Turkish Cypriots` rights, he concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, resumed on May 15, this year.
