Cypriot voters you can make a difference in Enfield

A new study has revealed that migrant voters could play a key role in deciding the outcome of the general election for politicians contesting seats in the borough of Enfield.

A report published by Dr Robert Ford from The University of Manchester reveals for example that in Enfield North, which Conservative Nick de Bois won in 2010 with a majority of 3.8 per cent, has a migrant vote power of 4.9 per cent – meaning that the size of the immigrant vote is larger than his majority.

The report reveals that the constituency of Enfield north has the tenth highest potential migrant vote power of anywhere in the country with with just slightly fewer migrant voters than in Tooting in south London.

The seat in the north of the borough has been named by Labour as a target seat it is aiming to claw back from the Tories in May’s general election.

The report speculates that migrant voters are traditionally more receptive to positive messages about race, equality and embracing diversity.

The report’s authors state: “We estimate that populations of 100,000 migrants or more originating from 23 different countries now live in Britain.

“Smaller migrant communities in marginal seats however can be pivotal,” they add.

It is estimated that of migrants eligible to vote – the majority come from commonwealth countries such as Pakistan, India, Cyprus, South Africa and Nigeria.

So let’s hope you Cypriot’s get out and vote and make a difference. In Southgate itself you can vote for Bambos Charalambous who could become our first Cypriot MP and that would be a great achievement for our community and hopefully encourage our youngsters to follow in his footsteps and make an impression in our new homeland whether its socially or professionally in politics, sports, theatre, music and the arts.
