Mustafa Akinci must be tested and Nicos Anastasiades has to clearly state that he is ready to negotiate on the basis of what the UN Secretary-General sets out, stressed the member of the Political Bureau of AKEL Aristos Damianou.
Speaking to “Astra” radio station in the morning, he characterized as a positive element that the President accepts the appointment of a Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus problem. Unfortunately however, he said, the President has not clarified whether he accepts the procedure as defined by the UNSG himself.
By the President projecting the issues of security and guarantees, and the Turkish side something else, negotiations will not begin and once Turkey has been relieved of its responsibilities, the responsibility will fall on Cypriot territory, stressed Aristos Damianou.
He rejected the objections of the so-called Intermediate spectrum that it is not clear in the Guterres framework what will happen with the occupation troops, the guarantees and intervention rights, pointing out that it is quite clear that their abolition is being called for.
A.Damianou also stressed that the Guterres framework represents a good basis for the resumption of negotiations and characterized as lame excuses what various forces and circles are suggesting. He also clarified that there is only one Guterres framework and it is there to be negotiated.
He also wondered whether President Anastasiades choses to continue the talks or if he wants to say to the so-called intermediate spectrum what they want to hear, something which does not serve the country’s interests.
AKEL, A. Damianou concluded, remains committed to its goal for the dismantling of the wall of partition.
