Authorities in Cyprus urged the pubic on Friday to donate blood due to serious shortage, that could lead to operations being postponed.
Head of Blood Center Androulla Panagiotou told the Cyprus News Agency that blood stock levels are “at dangerously low levels.”
She said that there are serious shortages as many donors are away on vacation, adding that currently “surgeries are at risk of being postponed”. Panagiotou also said patients’ transfusions will probably be scheduled for a later time, due to the shortage.
She noted that demand is very high and urged people to donate blood either before they get away for vacations or when they return.
Panagiotou explained that 300 bottles of blood are needed every day to cover the safety stock, adding that there is a daily struggle to make sure that safety level needs are met.
She said that they are faced with cases of hemorrhage following daily operations.
A scheduled blood donation will take place next week at the Mall of Nicosia Mall. All donations will be on the Center’s website on Saturday.
Blood centers will be open throughout the day in all districts next week.
Nicosia and Limassol stations will be open from 07:30 to 20:00, while those in Paphos and Larnaca will be open all day, unless they are called for external blood donation. In that case the timetable will change from 07:30 to 15:00.
