The EU and the international community must react and defend international law with regard to Turkey`s provocative stance in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), House President Yiannakis Omirou has stressed. At the same time, he underscored the need to redraft the national strategy on the Cyprus issue.
Speaking at the unveiling of a monument to the fallen heroes Charalambos and Anastasis Christofi in Fikardou, Omirou said that Turkish proposals and approach to the Cyprus issue provide for a two state solution.
These approaches, he recalled, have been reiterated by Tayip Erdogan and Ahmet Davutoglu during there recent illegal visits to Cyprus` northern Turkish occupied areas. Moreover, the ongoing invasive behaviour of Turkey in the Republic`s EEZ constitutes a colossal provocation, he pointed out.
“Faced with this situation, we have a duty to stress our decisive resistance,” he said, adding that unity on the home front is a must. “National unity and the reassessing our strategy in the overall handling of the Cyprus problem is an urgent necessity, which is directly linked to the physical and national survival of Cypriot Hellenism”, he said.
Omirou pointed out that “we should exploit the new geostrategical, geopoliticsal and geoeconomical facts in the region, with the discovery of natural gas in our EEZ and we should develop initiatives for a solution, in full coordination with Greece.”
The solution, he concluded, should be in line with European Law and Cyprus` EU membership.
