Cyprus ranks third in EU for tourist overnight stays per resident

Cyprus recorded the third-highest number of tourist overnight stays per resident in the European Union in 2025, according to Eurostat figures published on Friday, 16 October.

The island registered 19.4 overnight stays in tourist accommodation per inhabitant, behind Croatia on 24.5 and Malta on 21.7. Greece followed with 15.1 and Austria with 14.6.

The measure, known as tourism intensity, compares overnight stays with the resident population and helps indicate the potential pressure tourism places on local communities.

Across the EU, the average rose to 7.0 overnight stays per resident, from 6.7 in 2024. Romania recorded the lowest figure at 1.6, followed by Latvia at 2.7, and Poland and Slovakia at 2.9 each.

EU tourist accommodation establishments recorded 3.1 billion overnight stays in 2025, an increase of 4.1% on the previous year. Domestic and international visitors accounted for almost equal shares.

The total was 26.5% higher than in 2015, when approximately 2.5 billion overnight stays were recorded.
