The government concentrates its efforts right now on the economy, however progress towards a solution of the Cyprus problem is also very important, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said. Addressing a cultural event Saturday, the President pointed out the need to work in unity and in a careful way in order to solve the Cyprus issue.
“Right now we are concentrating on efforts to restart the economy and deal with the everyday problems citizens are faced with, however the need to prepare and work in unity and methodically for the termination of Turkey’s occupation is also on our minds”, he noted. The President also underlined his government’s will to support initiatives and actions towards enhancing relations between the central government and local councils.
The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and since then occupy 37% of Cyprus’ territory. UN backed talks were halted in July 2012 by the Turkish side when Cyprus assumed the EU Council Presidency. It is expected that talks will resume in the autumn
