Gladbeck mayor visits Enfield to strengthen twin-town ties

Enfield has welcomed a delegation from its German twin town, Gladbeck, for a visit focusing on heritage, regeneration and community links.

Mayor of Enfield Cllr Emma Supple hosted Gladbeck Mayor Bettina Weist and Deputy Mayor Dr Volker Kreuzer, marking a friendship dating back to 1970.

The visit followed Cllr Supple’s attendance at Gladbeck’s Appeltatenfest celebrations in September, when Enfield representatives invited their counterparts to the borough. According to the council, it was the first visit by Gladbeck’s mayor for several years.

The delegation toured Meridian Water, Forty Hall, Myddelton House, Whitewebbs Museum of Transport, Enfield Town, Trent Park Museum of Secrets and Ellenborough Table Tennis Club.

The programme provided opportunities to exchange ideas on regeneration, heritage conservation, culture, leisure and sustainable growth.

Enfield and Gladbeck were originally paired because of their shared industrial backgrounds and extensive green spaces, as part of a wider European movement promoting reconciliation and cooperation after the Second World War.

Cllr Supple said the partnership remained a valuable opportunity to strengthen international friendships and learn from one another.

She also introduced the visitors to Whitewebbs Museum, one of her three chosen mayoral charities, alongside Insight Enfield – SORT IT! and One to One Enfield.
