Precariously perched mattress cleared in fly-tipping fight back
Efforts to fight fly-tipping reached new heights in Haringey when officers were called in to collect a mattress from a roof.
The bizarre find was among several items collected from Stoneleigh Road car park, after the council received complaints about rubbish being dumped.
While it remains a mystery how it got there, the council’s enforcement team was able to remove the mattress with the help of a local shopkeeper.
A fridge freezer was also cleared, as well as bags of rubbish, overflowing bins and abandoned cardboard boxes.
A number of the items were traced to nearby businesses, whose land back on to the carpark, and one clocked up five fixed penalty notices as a result.
They claimed they did not realise that leaving their rubbish there was an offence.
The crackdown was part of wider Operation Twilight, which saw the council’s enforcement officers, together with Veolia, visit a range of spots around the borough where it was suspected that businesses were dumping their waste.
As well as Stoneleigh Road, teams cleared up in West Green Road, Seven Sisters Road, Turnpike Lane, Green Lanes and Bruce Grove.
They issued a total of 41 fixed penalty notices and ordered 10 businesses to clear up or face court action.
Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr Stuart McNamara said:
“While finding them on roof tops is a bit unusual, it is sadly not rare for the council to receive reports of bulky items and rubbish dumped in public places.
“Fly-tipping is unacceptable and there are plenty of responsible and much less costly ways for businesses and residents to dispose of their rubbish.
As this operation has shown, we will not hesitate to take action against those who blight our streets in this way.”
