Consultation launched this week asking how these valuable spaces could be better improved to serve the whole community.
While a large proportion of the borough’s kerbsides are used for parking, less than 50 per cent of households in Haringey own a car and more than 70 per cent of journeys are made by walking, cycling or public transport.
Feedback will guide the development of the council’s Kerbside Strategy and Electric Vehicle (EV) Strategy that balance different needs, whether people walk, wheel, cycle or drive.
Cllr Mike Hakata, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport, said:
We are reimagining our streets so we can shape a fairer, greener borough for everyone.
This is about creating streets that work for our whole community. Whether you would like more EV charging points, trees, easier parking or places to sit, cycle or meet friends, we want to hear from you.
Your views will help ensure any changes balance the needs of the community fairly and make our streets more accessible, inclusive and welcoming for all.
The EV Strategy will guide the council’s priorities for infrastructure and ensure it meets the needs of residents as well as making EV use practical and accessible whilst improving air quality for everyone.
Meanwhile, the council is also keen to hear ideas on bringing green spaces closer to people’s homes and where greenery, seating and social spaces could be situated in local neighbourhoods through the Kerbside Strategy.
In line with the Haringey Deal, the engagement exercise sets out to tap into the strengths, knowledge, expertise and passion of local people to tackle the big challenges the borough faces. This second phase of consultation follows initial engagement in March on aspects of the two strategies.
