Help us catch dangerous moped riders

“Young people riding dangerously and inconsiderately are causing a nuisance throughout Hertsmere and we need your help to catch those responsible before someone is injured,” said Assistant Investigator Claire Morris from the Community Safety Unit.

“Although we have given out several warnings and seized bikes alongside Community Protection Warnings and Community Protection Notices, we need the public’s help in giving us registration numbers and descriptions of the offending motorcyclists, to keep our roads and streets safer.”

The offences are anti-social riding, riding dangerously on roads, pavements and in alleyways, not wearing helmets and causing harassment, alarm and distress to members of the public

She said: “The problem is that they are not only a danger to themselves, but they are also a danger to pedestrians and other road users.”

Since June, five section 59 warnings have been issued with two leading to seizures of the motorcycles from boys aged 16 and 17. They were issued alongside the more serious CPWs and CPNs. A breach of a CPN is a criminal offence and therefore arrestable.

She added: “I’d encourage parents not to buy these motorised scooters/mopeds for their children unless they have a suitable place for them to ride safely. Many people do not realise they also need to be registered to the owner and adequately insured.”

If you have any information, including number plates or video footage of dangerous riders, please call police on 101.
