Speaking to a Foreign Press Association event in London on Monday, Lammy was asked about Labour’s position, but also about the lack of reference to Cyprus in his party’s manifesto – a reference that features in the Conservatives’ election pledges.
“We remain committed to a bizonal, bicommunal federated system and the UN process as it takes place and we will play our role in that process. Of course I want to see peace and stability to a conflict that’s now gone on for 50 years,” said Lammy.
He added that his north London constituency (Tottenham) “has been historically one of the natural homes of many Cypriots, I grew up with many Cypriots in my part of north London, so I have been well aware of that conflict now for many many years indeed.”
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
