A young woman from Sotira, the mother of two-year-old twin boys, was killed in a traffic accident on the Larnaca to Ayia Napa highway on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the police, Evdokia Panayiotou, 37, was a front seat passenger in her family’s SUV. She had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and died after being thrown from the vehicle.
Police believes she may have survived if she had been wearing a seat belt as the front seat of the car was undamaged in the crash.
Her husband Andreas, 42, was driving and wearing a seat belt. He was seriously injured and was due to undergo surgery.
The couple’s twin sons were only slightly injured. They were strapped into age-appropriate and properly-placed car seats at the time of the accident, the police said.
According to the police, the accident happened at 1.30pm when the car, under still unknown conditions, veered off the road, hit the metal railing and overturned several times.
The driver and his sons are being treated for their injuries at Famagusta General Hospital.
Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.
