New Plans for Warmer Homes in Enfield

Yesterday (30 November) Enfield Council launched a new strategy to bring affordable warmth to homes in the borough at a special event.

Enfield Council, fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA) and British Gas came together to agree policies to tackle fuel poverty, both now and in the future. Local organisations were on hand during the day to give important energy saving advice and each attendee received a free ‘energy champion pack’.

As part of the Council’s ambitious Enfield 2020 Sustainability Programme, British Gas has provided funding for millions of pounds worth of energy efficiency improvements to council properties in the borough over the last few years including wall insulation, double glazing and upgraded heating systems. These improvements will support the aims of the programme to make the borough a better place to live, work and visit.

British Gas supports the Enfield 2020 programme via the £1.2m Community Action Partnership, delivered by NEA and British Gas to bring affordable warmth to the borough.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health & Sport, Cllr Nneka Keazor, who officially opened the event, said “Everyone has the right to live in a safe, warm home, and a huge amount of work has gone into helping to alleviate fuel poverty in the borough in the past few years.

“But the problem is that in 2013, nearly 13,000 households in Enfield could not afford to heat their homes sufficiently.

“The council’s strategy to tackle fuel poverty includes raising awareness, reducing fuel spend, maximising income, improving the housing stock and providing energy advice.”

Maria Wardrobe, Director of External Affairs at NEA said: “We’re delighted to be working with British Gas and Enfield Council to launch the ‘Warmer Homes’ Strategy which took place during NEA’s Warm Homes Campaign.

“The campaign promotes the excellent work partners like Enfield are undertaking to tackle the UK’s cold home crisis and I applaud their commitment.”

Chris Tate, Head of Corporate Responsibility at British Gas, said: “We’re really pleased to support the great work Enfield Council is doing to promote energy efficiency.

“British Gas has an important role to play in helping bring warmer homes to those in need. By working together through the Community Action Partnership we can make a really positive impact.”
