North Middlesex University is opening its new maternity unit tomorrow, as Chase Farm hospital closes its ward.
The hospital in Sterling Way, Edmonton, will open its doors to expecting mothers for the first time tomorrow, marking the start of its expansion plan.
A long battle to save the maternity ward at the Enfield hospital, was lost last Tuesday at the High Court when the Lord Justice reject Enfield Borough Council’s appeal against the downgrade.
This gave the go ahead for services to be opened at North Middlesex as part of the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) plans to streamline services at Chase Farm and expand services at Barnet and the Edmonton hospitals.
There will be eight ‘home from home’ birth rooms, six of which will contain birthing pools and all will include double beds.
Fiona Laird, head of the hospital’s award-winning midwifery team said: “Women will be able to give birth here in a wonderful, warm and caring environment. They can share the joy of giving birth with their partner, safe in the knowledge that all the best medical expertise and equipment is on hand should they need it. We’re proud to be able to offer such a brilliant service to local mums, which stand favourable comparison with any hospital in London.”
Chief executive Julie Lowe said: “Around £200 million has been invested in our new buildings over the last five years. The maternity unit is our latest state-of-the-art facility of which we are proud. We look forward to being able to show mums-to-be the great hospital we have become.
Come and see us for yourself.”
