Omonia took the year’s first trophy on Saturday, defeating AEL 5-3 to win the Super Cup in an exciting tie between last season’s champions and the cup winners.
Omonia, which crashed out of Europe earlier this month, seemed the most determined to win on the night. For its part, the Limassol team played without nine of its key players with coach Pambos Christodolou clearly careful to guard against any injuries in anticipation of Wednesday’s important Champions League match against Anderlecht.
Scorers for Omonia were Leandro (20th) Alves (35th penalty), Avraam (45) Freddy (65) and Efrem (90+6) . For AEL, scorers were Constantinou who scored a brace (21 and 55- penalty) and Miguel (72).
Omonia opened the score, with AEL equalising a minute later. The Nicosia team then took control of the game, scoring another two goals before half time.
There was more action in the second half, with AEL narrowing up the gap with a penalty, but Omonia hit back and scored two more to make it 4-2. AEL pulled one back, before Efrem also saw the net for the final 5-3.
