Parikiaki gives paper talk to Latymer All Saints School in Enfield
On Thursday February the 9th Michael Yiakoumi from Parikiaki Newspaper paid a visit to Latymer All Saints School in Enfield, where the 90 children in year 5 for the last three weeks had been doing a project on Journalism as a result Michael who works as a Journalist and is responsible for the marketing of the newspaper was invited to give a talk to the children on the newspaper.
Michael gave reasons on why we need a newspaper to inform us of news taking place not only locally but all over the world. Also where was the first newspaper produced it is believed to be in China where news were written on silk material and that in Ancient Roman times the news was carved on to stone and metal.
The children were made aware of the other forms of news media , radio, TV , internet and now recently the I phones.
Michael Yiakoumi then gave a brief outline of the Parikiaki Newspaper that they are a UK Cypriot community paper and that the Cypriots are from a small Island in the Mediterranean sea called Cyprus and that there is 350,000 living in the UK. He also explained that the news come generally from press releases from Government, Police, Councils and the public themselves. He also said that these sources usually give the newspaper photos and that the paper also has their own photographers who are out and about in the public. The children were reminded that the photos were very important, as good photos attract your eye to news and that the case of a good photo is being in the right place at the right time. For example being able to catch Rooney in action scoring a goal.

It was also explained to the children that for the paper to survive it needs to be sold and that there was a need to obtain advertisements where companies promote their products and pay for this service.
The children then asked how the newspaper was produced they were explained briefly that the text is typed onto the computer where photos are also arranged on to the page and checked then sent as PDF’s to the printers who then produce the paper and then deliver to the shops.
Michael stressed that most newspapers also have their own websites where the public can view the newspaper and also read the news of the day.
The children really enjoyed the talk and asked Michael Yiakoumi several questions and they showed Michael front page news that they had produced and he was very impressed with their quality work.
