Electricity throughout the island was restored by noon on Wednesday, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus has announced.
Most of Cyprus had been without electricity since around 5:00 am after a technical problem at one of the units at the Dhekelia power plant triggered problems in all but one of the EAC’s units there and elsewhere on the island.
The return of electricity was gradual to avoid further complications and it is still unclear what has caused technical the problem.
EAC staff were working to repair the problem and also to set in operation portable generators that have been installed at Vassiliko power station but were not on in operation over night.
Police have recalled traffic police from leave to facilitate the early morning rush hour.
The outage has revived painful memories of the July 11 blast at Mari naval base which destroyed Vassiliko, the island’s biggest power plant.
The plant is still being repaired and the EAC has been coping with old installations at Dhekelia and Moni, as well as with generators.
