Premier League

Portuguese forward Ivan Cavaleiro rescued a precious point for an impressive Fulham on Wednesday as they came from behind to draw 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Fulham started brightly with long spells of possession, but it was Spurs who took the lead in the 25th minute. A long ball from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg found Sergio Reguilon down the left and he put in a perfectly weighted cross which Harry Kane dived to head in for his 11th league goal of the season.

Scott Parker’s side resumed the second half like they began the first, pressing and keeping hold of the ball. They made their breakthrough in the 74th minute when Cavaleiro rose highest to head in a cross from Ademola Lookman.

Spurs, looking tired and short of ideas, failed to retake the lead and the draw left them sixth in the standings, six points off the top. Fulham remained in the bottom three but are only two points from the safety zone.

Manchester City moved to within four points of the Premier League summit as Phil Foden’s goal earned them a nervy 1-0 victory over struggling Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.

Foden’s clinical finish just before halftime on a sodden night at the Etihad Stadium proved enough for City to claim a fourth successive league win, but it was far from comfortable.

City had chances in the second half to stretch their lead with keeper Robert Sanchez and the woodwork coming to Brighton’s rescue but the visitors finished strongly.

The hosts could have eased the tension in stoppage time but substitute Raheem Sterling blazed a penalty over the crossbar.

City held on, however, to move into the top four with 32 points from 16 games, four behind leaders Manchester United and one behind champions Liverpool having played one match less.

The victory, in the re-arranged fixture, put United on 36 points from 17 games with rivals Liverpool on 33 points ahead of the clash between the two sides at Anfield on Sunday.

The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Marcus Rashford floated in a ball from the right which Pogba met with a volley that deflected off Burnley defender Matt Lowton and beat the wrong-footed Nick Pope.

It is the first time United have been top of the league after 17 games, since December 2012.

United skipper Harry Maguire had an effort ruled out in the first half after referee Kevin Friend ruled he had pushed Erik Pieters as he rose to head in a Luke Shaw cross at the back post.

Burnley applied some late pressure and felt they should have had a penalty when the ball appeared to hit Maguire’s arm and James Tarkowski had a great chance to grab a point for the Clarets but failed to make good contact from a goalscoring position.

Keane seals win for Everton at Wolves

Everton claimed a sixth win from nine away games this season as Michael Keane’s late header earned them a 2-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers to move them into fourth spot in the Premier League on Tuesday.

A lively opening saw Alex Iwobi fire Everton in front before Ruben Neves replied for Wolves.

Wolves had looked the more likely winners in a dull second half but Keane’s towering header in the 77th minute sealed maximum points for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Everton moved into the top four with 32 points from 17 games while Wolves dropped a place to 14th spot with 22.

Sheffield United finally win at 18th attempt

Billy Sharp’s second-half penalty earned Sheffield United a long-awaited first Premier League victory of the season as they deservedly beat Newcastle United 1-0 on Tuesday.

Chris Wilder’s side had failed to win any of their opening 17 matches of the season — the worst start to a Premier League campaign — but finally came good to taste a league victory for the first time since July.

Newcastle, reduced to 10 men when Ryan Fraser was sent off just before halftime, were abject and could have few complaints as their winless league run extended to six matches.

Sheffield United dominated the first half with Dave McGoldrick twice going close and they were eventually rewarded in the 73rd minute when substitute Sharp coolly converted from the spot after Federico Fernandez was adjudged to have knocked the ball away with his hand under pressure from Sharp.

Victory more than doubled Sheffield United’s points tally to five although they remain rock bottom and nine points behind Brighton and Hove Albion who sit one place above the drop zone

Arsenal’s impressive recent resurgence in the Premier League was checked by Crystal Palace as their attack failed to spark in a dismal 0-0 draw at the Emirates on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta’s side were bidding for a fourth successive league win but could find no way through an obdurate Palace who, if anything, might feel they could have emerged with a win.
