President Anastasiades thanks Britain for its support

President Nicos Anastasiades has expressed optimism that the people of Cyprus will make it and overcome the current economic crisis the country is facing.

Speaking at a reception to mark the Queen’s Birthday, hosted by the British High Commissioner Mathew Kidd, President Anastasiades thanked the British High Commission in Cyprus for the solidarity towards Cyprus and its people. “I really want to congratulate you. This is a spirit of solidarity towards Cyprus and its people who are experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis,” he said.

President Anastasiades thanked the British government for the important contribution and assistance, with expertise on crisis management, during the crucial hours after Eurogroup’s decision.

Anastasiades referred to the cooperation between the two countries on modernizing and shaping the new form of public administration.

“If we are still proud of something, this is the Public Service”, whose structure and mode of operation is based on the British system of administration, he noted.

“I want to assure everyone that we will succeed because we are stubborn and because we have experienced and overcome difficult times in the past”, he pointed out.

Referring to relations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, President Anastasiades expressed confidence that Europe will help Cyprus to become a modern European homeland for everybody.

On his part, the High Commissioner Matthew Kidd, speaking in Greek, said that the event was dedicated primarily to the volunteers and secondly to all those who support volunteerism in these difficult days for the island.

“I am convinced that this spirit of solidarity, this Cypriot tradition of mutual aid will be an important foundation for the efforts of Cyprus and its people, to get out the current difficult situation the soonest”, “he concluded.
