Solution to Cyprus problem will help Turkey’s accession

Turkey’s chief negotiator with the European Union, Engemen Bagis, has said that a solution to the Cyprus problem would remove the biggest obstacle for his country’s accession.

Bagis said Turkey would accept whatever agreement is reached by the two sides in Cyprus.

Turkey is in full control of the affairs of the Turkish Cypriot community, and has both political and military control in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

Bagis added that the election of President Anastasiades offers an opportunity for a solution, but added that he has been hit be the economic crisis and must be given some time to deal with the situation.

He also said that there is a political crisis looming in the Turkish occupied part of the island.

Bagis claimed that a solution to the Cyprus problem is not so difficult if each side states to which parts of the Annan plan it objects and put them forth in the negotiations.
