Southgate station will operate as exit-only from Monday 05 January 2026 until mid-March 2026. This is due to essential maintenance work on one of the two escalators. The remaining escalator will operate upwards only. We are very sorry that this will inconvenience station users. The escalator maintenance work is essential to ensure ongoing safety, provide better reliability, and reduce the risk of longer unplanned closures.
The station will need to operate as exit-only during the escalator works as some of the ticket barriers will be closed as they will be blocked by hoardings, which are needed to keep customers and colleagues safe during the works. The limited number of remaining ticket barriers doesn’t allow enough space for people to safely enter and exit the station at the same time.
During the closure, customers will not be able to access the Piccadilly line from Southgate. They will be advised to use local bus services to nearby Piccadilly line stations – Arnos Grove, Oakwood, or Cockfosters – as well as Palmers Green National Rail station for Great Northern services towards Finsbury Park and Moorgate.
Routes 298 and 382 offer a combined peak frequency of up to 7 buses an hour to Arnos Grove, while routes 298 and 299 offer up to 7 buses an hour to Cockfosters, and route 121 offers up to 6 buses an hour to Oakwood. Routes 121 and W6 offer up to 12 buses an hour to Palmers Green national rail station. Route N91 also offers Night Bus links every 30 minutes to Arnos Grove, Oakwood, Cockfosters and central London.
Customers are encouraged to check the TfL Journey Planner or the TfL Go app, as there may be quicker alternative routes depending on their specific journey.
