Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday that the Greek Cypriot side will continue its struggle aiming at reunifying the island on the basis of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation, ruling out any form of partition.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities, President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed talks since mid May with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
On 15 November 1983, Turkey instigated and endorsed a “unilateral declaration of independence” in the occupied area by the Turkish Cypriot leadership.
“Thirty two years are completed today from the day that Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership proceeded to the illegal unilateral declaration of the pseudo-state, in the framework of their policy to make permanent and to legitimize the faits accomplis of the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation and division of Cyprus” Christodoulides said in a written statement.
He noted that the international community reacted in a condemnatory manner through a series of United Nations Security Council resolutions, describing it the declaration of the pseudo-state as legally invalid and calling upon all states not to recognize it.
“The declaration of the pseudo-state was condemned and is still being condemned today, since a lawful outcome cannot be produced as a result of an illegal act such as the use of military force” the Spokesman said.
“We continue our struggle on the basis of international law and of European law and principles, aiming at the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation, with one single sovereignty, one single citizenship and one single international personality, with political equality as defined in the relevant UN resolutions” he reiterated.
We rule out any form of partition, he stressed, underlining that only the termination of the occupation and the reunification of Cyprus and its people will bring about growth, prosperity and conditions of peace and security for our homeland.
