Cyprus Football Association (CFA) President Costakis Koutsokoumnis – who last year met and signed a memorandum of understanding with the head of the Turkish Cyprus football federation, Hasan Sertoglu – had been invited to the awards ceremony in the occupied part of Cyprus and was seen handing out the trophy to Turkish Cypriot champions Lefke.
Pictures were later posted to Facebook by the Turkish Cypriot football body’s media officer, Deniz Birinci.
“Sertoglu and Koutsokoumnis gave the trophy together to Lefke, the 2013-2014 Cup Champion of the Turkish Cypriot football league. This is a huge step towards the reunification of Cypriot football. BRAVO to both Presidents for their courageous steps, leading the way for all CYPRIOTS to break their taboos.”
In his speech, Koutsokoumnis described his invite as “an honour” adding that “there is hope for Cyprus, and for football on the island”.
