Three serious cases of heatstroke in Nicosia hospital, OKYpY spokesperson tells CNA

Three elderly individuals are being treated for severe heatstroke at Nicosia General Hospital, as the particularly high temperatures and prolonged heatwave of recent days continue to affect the population, mainly affecting the vulnerable groups, State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY) spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou told CNA on Thursday.

He said the patients include a 72-year-old man and two women aged 73 and 90, who were transported from their homes with severe symptoms of heatstroke.

According to the attending physicians, their health condition is deemed serious but stable, with signs of gradual improvement, Charilaou added.

He also said that the Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) of the island’s hospitals are receiving an “increased” number of patients showing symptoms of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn.

Most cases, he said, involve elderly individuals, who, after receiving appropriate medical assistance, are discharged with instructions.

He urged the public to be particularly cautious, to avoid exposure to the sun, and to stay adequately hydrated.

Charilaou also urged individuals with symptoms to immediately contact their personal doctor for further instructions.
