A woman was rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus after a kitchen fire broke out in a flat in Circular Road, Tottenham, yesterday evening.
A smoke alarm sounded alerting neighbours to the fire, who then called the Brigade.
The woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service suffering from smoke inhalation.
The fire is believed to have been caused by unattended cooking.
Watch Manager Mike Cotton who was at the scene, said: “There was a lot of smoke but the fire was dealt with very quickly by the crews. You should never leave cooking unattended, even for a few minutes as it can get too hot or burn.
“Fortunately the smoke alarm alerted neighbours to the fire, it is vital that you have at least one smoke alarm fitted to each level of your home as they can give you warning of a fire and extra time to escape.”
London Fire Brigade recently launched a campaign called Know the Plan designed to improve awareness of fire safety for the residents of high rise buildings and purpose built blocks, such as this one in Tottenham and to encourage landlords and housing providers to act on their fire safety responsibilities.
Living in a flat is not more dangerous than living in a house, but it’s important to know that your fire plan should be different. If there is a fire elsewhere in the block but not inside your flat you’re usually safer staying in your flat unless heat or smoke is affecting you.
If you leave your flat you could be rushing into choking smoke, the fire itself or firefighters using equipment to bring the fire under control in another part of the building. To find out more visit www.knowtheplan.co.uk
Two fire engines and around 14 firefighters and officers from Tottenham fire station attended the incident. The Brigade was called at 2016 and brought the fire under control by 2040
