The members of the Board of British Cypriots have addressed letters to EU top official requesting their support towards ending the Turkish occupation of Cyprus, which in 2024 reached the dark 50-year milestone.
The diaspora body based in London has asked the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas and the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Chief David McAllister to “use (their) influence to share our story and bring attention to the ongoing illegal occupation which divides Cyprus.”
The signatories express their hope that with such support an end to the division of their beloved island would be brought about.
The letters summarise some of the human suffering caused since the 1974 Turkish invasion, and also the continuing actions by Turkey that undermine the Republic of Cyprus’s sovereign rights.
“A solution cannot be reached so long as Turkey insists on the establishment of a separate Turkish Cypriot state in the occupied territories,” read the two letters.
They are signed by the Board of British Cypriots members Doros Partasides, Antonis Savvides, Stella Protopapa-Dinenis, Nikos Savvides, Marie Nicholsby, Spyros Neophytou, Elissa Xenophontos, John Stergides, Spyros Papacharalambous, Dr Savvas Hadjiphilipou, Antonis Demetriou, George Hadjipavlis.
