University of Cyprus Computer Science Department wins important award

A team of researchers at the Laboratory for Internet Computing at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus and the Distributed Systems Group in the Information Systems Institute of the Technical University of Vienna has won the Best Paper Award for their work titled `ADVISE – A Framework for Evaluating Cloud Service Elasticity Behaviour`.

According to a press release, the award ceremony was held in the framework of the 12th International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC), which took place in Paris.

The paper presents ADVISE, a framework of tools to evaluate the elasticity of applications on Cloud, with the aim of minimising the cost of using Clouds, while at the same time maintaining the quality and performance of the applications.

ADVISE collects data concerning an application and the Cloud service on which it will be developed and, based on clustering and learning techniques, it calculates the elasticity behaviour of the application and the subsystems in the near future. Experiments on real Cloud platforms and applications showed that ADVISE has the ability to evaluate the elasticity behaviour of applications.

The project was carried out in the framework of CELAR (Cloud ELAsticity pRovisioning), a project partially funded by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, which aims at providing automatic, multi-grained resource allocation for cloud applications.
