The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has stated on Wednesday that everything that will be agreed upon at negotiation talks for a Cyprus settlement will be announced to the people.
He was speaking during an anti-occupation rally, in Nicosia, organized by the Turkish-occupied Municipality of Kyrenia and other groups. Asked to comment on recent statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, who referred to some aspects of a potential settlement, President Anastasiades clarified that “the positions stated by Akinci do not necessarily reflect the positions of the Greek Cypriot side”.
He went on to say that “we have on the table our proposals and their proposals. [Akinci] said what was discussed, not what we agreed upon”.
Addressing the Greek Cypriot refugees from Kyrenia, President Anastasiades assured them finally that “whatever is agreed, will be announced”, so as to avoid misinformation.
Asked about permanent derogations from the acquis communautaire and on guaranteed majorities of the population in the constituent states, the President replied that “there is no such issue”.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, resumed on May 15, this year.
