A major programme to upgrade kitchens and bathrooms in council properties has reached an important milestone with 100 homes completed across the borough.

Launched in September 2025, the two-year initiative forms part of the council’s wider commitment to modernise council homes and ensure they all meet the Decent Homes Standard by 2028.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning Cllr Sarah Williams marked the occasion by visiting a newly refurbished home to see the transformation first hand.

The tenant, who uses a wheelchair, now benefits from accessible kitchen features including pull down basket shelves designed for ease of use. They praised the quality of the work and the responsiveness of the contractors.

Cllr Williams has now visited three homes since the launch of the programme to see the positive impact of the improvements, including properties where wheelchair accessible showers and other adaptations have been installed.

She said:

Making sure every resident has a safe, warm and good quality home is at the heart of our work.

Meeting residents whose homes have been upgraded has shown me just how much these improvements mean in their day to day lives.

This project milestone is only the beginning. Our 10 year, £570m investment will allow us to continue delivering meaningful upgrades and transform the lives of thousands by driving up the comfort and quality of council housing.
The landmark investment of £570m for the Estate Renovation Plan will deliver 987 upgrades in 2026/27, 1,772 in 2027/28 and 1,929 in 2028/29.

Families will benefit from external wall and loft insulation, energy efficient doors and windows, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, new roofs, safety improvements and revamped communal spaces as part of the 10-year contract.
