Larnaca and Paphos airports face industrial action with ground staff threatening to strike over the non payment of overtime.Negotiations have reached an impasse, with trade unions said to be considering the possibility of activating the 10-day notice period prior to a work stoppage.Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday that the companies running the airports are citing the economic crisis and the need to ensure airports are competitive. They wish to come to an agreement on issues such as payment of the “compulsory” overtime, which amounts to only a few hours, for former government staff. Former government staff demand to be paid overtime even when they work during time periods when there are no flights. Their main claim is that there was a commitment made in 2006 when the management of airports was transferred to new employers that they would maintain the previous terms of employment for all government staff. This was allegedly not passed on to the new contracts due to a miscommunication between the Finance and Communications Ministries.
