AEL beat APOEL to earn first Super Cup in 30 years

AEL clinched the Cyprus Super Cup yesterday Wednesday night to beat current double holders APOEL 4-3 on penalties.

This win was sweet revenge forAEL who had lost 4-2 to APOEL in last season’s Cypriot Cup final. The win, which was decided in the penalty shoot-out after normal time had ended 0-0, was AEL’s fourth Super Cup triumph having last won the trophy 30 years had missed decent scoring opportunities.

Both sides missed several opportunities in normal time.

Then it was straight into a penalty shoot-out after the 90 minutes had finished goalless where AEL skipper Marios Nikolaou kept his cool to score the deciding penalty and seal AEL’s first trophy since winning the league title back in 2012.

APOEL’s next game will be in Kazakhstan where they face FC Astana in the Champions League playoff first leg on Tuesday.
