Left-wing opposition AKEL has criticised the former Nicos Anastasiades government’s handling of the electricity interconnector project with Greece.
In a statement on Thursday, AKEL said the project is part of the broader energy crisis facing Cyprus and that the former government led by right-wing DISY bears significant responsibility for the exorbitant electricity costs.
The party emphasised that while ending Cyprus’s electrical isolation is a national goal, the terms and content of the project must be carefully considered. AKEL highlighted the need for tangible benefits for consumers, reduced electricity costs, and a comprehensive energy strategy.
The party expressed concerns about the potential risks and uncertainties associated with the project, including the cost, dependence on a single route, and the possibility of delays or obstacles.
AKEL warned that without securing these aspects, the country risks taking a significant leap into the unknown.
