AKEL: Anastasiades must respect Parliament’s decision to extend the suspension of foreclosures

The political parties supporting the candidacies of Averof Neophytou and Nikos Christodoulides are arguing among each other unfairly. Those who support these two DISY candidates also support the policy that for ten years now has increased the arbitrariness of the banks and left borrowers unprotected.
The ruling DISY party of Averof Neophytou did not in the end tire of approving laws that favor the banks and against borrowers, which is precisely why they continued with the same policy unabated yesterday. While the loan management companies are provoking society by advertising a festival of property sales, the ruling DISY party continues to promote the interests it has undertaken the task of serving. And the leaderships of DIKO and EDEK yesterday backed the extension of the suspension of foreclosures. However, the presidential candidate they support, the DISY official Nikos Christodoulides, opposes the suspension as it disregards the distress thousands of households and small professionals are going through.
AKEL calls on Nicos Anastasiades to respect the decision of the House of Representatives and not to revoke or refer the targeted three-month suspension of foreclosures.
We call on the outgoing President – even belatedly, for once in his decade of rule – to put the interests of society over and above the banks and powerful private interests.
