Anastasiades – Tsipras hold telephone conversation over Cyprus

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras held a telephone conversation on Sunday, to exchange views in view of the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said in a post on his twitter account.

Earlier, in another post, Christodoulides said that the Conference on Cyprus will continue, at a technocratic level, from 18 to 20 January, in Mont Pelerin, Switzerland.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed talks since May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.

Between January 9-11 they held talks under the UN auspices in Geneva, following by a Conference on Cyprus which decided to establish a working group at the level of deputies with the task to identify specific questions as regards guarantees and security and the instruments needed to address them.

The group will commence its work on 18 January and the Conference will continue at political level immediately thereafter to review the outcome of the working group’s discussions. In parallel, the negotiations on outstanding issues in the other chapters will continue between the two sides in Cyprus.
