Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order Emily Yiolitis has said that a police department dealing with complaints about animal welfare is expected to be established and become operational within May.
In a written statement in which she condemned an alleged incident of dog abuse which became public through social media, Yiolitis expressed the government`s “will and determination to deal with such incidents which are not a source of pride for any of us.”
Within May, she added, the animal police is expected to be established and operate, noting that a protocol will be signed with all relevant authorities and agencies on how to deal with reports and complaints about animal welfare.
She also said that the necessary steps will be taken to modernise and increase the penalties incurred for animal cruelty, abuse and torture as they are very low.
Yiolitis added that one of the recommendations put forward is for the penalty for animal abuse to be €500 instead of €86.
She continued pointing out that an animal cruelty line is expected to operate soon where people will be able to report such incidents.
“The aim is for such reports to be immediately directed to the relevant department in order for it to deal with them,” the Justice Minister said.
She further expressed the hope that everyone will treat animals with humanity, love and respect.
