Appeal after scooter thrown on tracks near New Southgate

Officers from BTP are appealing for information after a child’s scooter was thrown onto the tracks between New Southgate and Oakleigh Park stations.

The Virgin Trains East Coast service from Kings Cross to York was travelling through the area on Friday, 17 June when it struck the scooter at approximately 9.30am.

The train involved was damaged as a result of the strike and was taken out of service as repairs were made. Likewise, there was significant disruption to services as a result of this incident.

Investigating officer Sergeant Adam Fairweather said: “This was a ludicrously dangerous thing to do and whilst no one was injured the ending could have been lethal.

“Trains on this line can travel at speeds up to 125mph, and anyone playing near the railway or putting objects on the line is dicing with death.

“I’d like to hear from anyone who recognises this scooter or knows the person that did this. If you have information please text us on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40 and quote reference 176 of 19/07/2016.”

You can also pass information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
