Appeal following a fatal collision – A1 Barnet

Officers investigating a fatal collision on the A1 near Barnet are appealing for information and witnesses.

The incident happened just before 11.10am yesterday (Wednesday, June 14) on the northbound carriageway of the A1 Barnet bypass, near Borehamwood.

Officers attended the incident alongside the ambulance service and air ambulance.

A Ford KA was in collision with a Mercedes Sprinter van and a Daff 44 tonne lorry, both of which were parked in the layby adjacent to the main carriageway south of Rowley Lane.

The driver of the Ford KA, a woman in her 40s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to St George’s Hospital in London for treatment. Sadly, she died later that day. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

The driver of the van suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. The driver of the lorry was unhurt.

The northbound carriageway remained shut for almost five hours to allow the emergency services to work at the scene and investigate the circumstances.

PC Jackie Lister, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, said: “We are doing all we can to fully investigating this incident in order to establish what happened prior to the collision. Therefore I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events leading up to it, to please contact me.

“Additionally, a lot of motorists now have dash cams installed in their vehicles so it’s possible the incident may have been captured on video. If you have any footage that could prove useful to the investigation, please contact me on Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101 so we can review this.”

Anyone with any information that could assist the investigation is asked to call PC Lister on Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101, quoting ISR 278 of June 14.
