Officers investigating an alleged assault that occurred in Potters Bar are appealing for information and witnesses.

At around 1.30pm (Thursday, July 6) the victim – a man aged in his 90s – was sitting on a bench in Oakmere Park close to the basketball pitch and the Grove Road park entrance when he was assaulted.

He suffered two puncture wounds to his back and was taken to hospital.

Detective Inspector John Hazeldine, who is investigating, said: “This incident occurred on a sunny afternoon when I’m sure there were several people enjoying the nice weather in the park. I’m appealing to anyone who was in the park yesterday and witnessed this incident to get in touch as you may have information that could assist the investigation.

“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously and running from the park via the Grove Road exit.

“This type of crime is extremely unusual in Potters Bar and there was a significant police response following the incident.

“The victim currently remains in hospital where he is recovering from his injuries.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Hertfordshire Constabulary via the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference J3/17/944.
