The Greek Foreign Ministry has made a strong démarche to Turkey`s Ambassador in Athens with regard to Ankara’s provocative moves in and around Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone.
According to a Ministry announcement, on the instructions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, the Foreign Ministry’s Secretary General, Ambassador Anastassis Mitsialis, summoned to the Ministry the Turkish Ambassador Kerim Uras, to whom he made a démarche regarding the issuing of an illegal NAVTEX on exploration by the Turkish research vessel Barbaros in areas of Cyprus’ EEZ as well as regarding the tension Turkey is causing through its actions in the region.
Turkey’s moves led to the suspension by the Greek Cypriot side, for the time being, of its participation in the UN-led peace talks. Nicosia has briefed its EU partners and other government on the situation created by Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean.
