Austrian Chancellor expresses hope that Cyprus division ends soon

Chancellor of Austria, Christian Stocker has expressed hope that the problem of the division of Cyprus will be resolved soon.

According to the Presidency, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and the Chancellor of Austria, who is paying Cyprus an official visit, visited Friday the Nicosia City Hall where they were welcomed by Mayor of the capital of Cyprus, Charalambos Prountzos.

The two leaders then toured along the ceasefire line. In a statement later to the media, Stocker said that what he saw reminded him of the then divided city of Berlin and expressed the hope that this division, the green line, would end in the future.

Meanwhile, according to the Municipality of Nicosia, the Austrian Chancellor wrote in the Municipality’s Guest Book, that he looks forward to an even more productive cooperation on issues of common interest between the two cities, Vienna and Nicosia, and by extension between Austria and Cyprus.

He also expressed his thanks for the opportunity to see first-hand the reality of the Green Line, in the last divided capital of Europe.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
