Ayia Napa: Footballers charged with alleged rape

TWO foreign footballers, charged with the alleged rape of a young British tourist, were yesterday released on €50,000 bail each.

Famagusta District Court yesterday announced the bail and set the trial for September 24.

The two men – aged 23 and 25 – who deny the charges, paid the bail and departed for Switzerland yesterday.

According to Famagusta police spokesman George Economou, the 23-year-old alleged victim will also attend the trial. The incident happened on April 23.

Speaking of the case, Economou explained: “The plaintiff came to the police and claimed she was raped; she was examined by a pathologist, who however said she didn’t have any injuries.”

He said the young tourist claimed she was drunk and didn’t consent to sexual contact. “They say they came into contact but with her consent,” said Economou. “It will all be clarified in court.”

He said the three were all staying in the same hotel in Ayia Napa, when the incident occurred.

Another police source confirmed the footballers played for a well-known Swiss team.
