Barnet’s Conservative councillors have forced through their Phase 1 plan to stop locking Barnet’s parks despite 1,300 people signing a petition opposing this. The Tories also pushed ahead with their plans to consult on Phase 2 which will cost up to £12,000 and would need to be done again if they proceed with Phase 3.
Labour councillors voted against the plans at the recent Environment Committee (14 March) and moved an amendment calling for all plans to cease locking parks to be abandoned, and for parks to be locked as they are now.
Barnet Labour’s lead on Environment, Cllr Alan Schneiderman said, “These plans are a threat to safety and security in our parks, and the Council have yet to get a view from the police.
“The Tories will be wasting tens of thousands of pounds consulting residents when over 1,300 residents have already told them they do not want the Council to stop locking parks.”
