Books of Cypriot and Greek interest published by Armida Books

Armida Books, a multiple-award-winning independent publisher based in Nicosia, Cyprus, was founded in 1997 to publish intelligent literary fiction and ground-breaking non-fiction on select topics.

Its website www.armidabooks.com/book-category/english-titles/ features an array of books of Cypriot and Greek interest. They include:

Stories of Famagusta – a collection of short stories that traces aspects of the life of Famagusta. Even though most of the characters featured in the stories are fictional, they represent inhabitants of the now Turkish-occupied Famagusta. The book was awarded the National Short Story Prize of the Republic of Cyprus.

Beneath The Carob Trees – Since 1981 the Committee on Missing Persons has worked to tackle an enduring humanitarian tragedy in Cyprus. Over the last decade, it has undertaken more than a thousand excavations and exhumations across the island, recovering and identifying the men, women and children who went missing forty or fifty years ago, and returning their remains to their families. The book chronicles their efforts and pays tribute to all those who labour to end the suffering of the bereaved and to support reconciliation between the communities.

The World of Cyprus 1960-1974 – A magnificent album by the eminent artist photographer Takis Demetriades, with informative captions written by Panos Ioannides. In the critical period of 1960 – 1974, a period which, with the events that marked it, changed the course of the history of our country, the sensitive lens of Takis Demetriades had recorded indelibly characteristic people of Cyprus. The images describe and preserve the way the simple, unspoilt, average Cypriot lived, worked, thought and spent, in earlier times, his leisure – the people of the town or the village, of the soil and hard work, of the sea, the field or the tranquil monastery.

Olives & Lemons: Traces of Cyprus Past – In this book, the author has tried to describe what is left of traditional Cyprus life, the practices, beliefs and physical environment that have been the essence of the island over the ages. Perhaps, after all, this age-old world of Cyprus village life will not be irrevocably lost, as she thought it must be when she first came to the village of Anogyra in the late 1980s. Today, young people are beginning to renovate their grandparents’ abandoned homes for their own holidays or eventual retirement. And visitors to the island, who make their way to these attractive villages, will gain an insight into the heart of Cyprus.
