A woman who had parked her car illegally at Larnaca airport was escorted with security guards to a departing plane to get money from her daughter who was onboard to pay for a clamping fine.
This was one case reported in the press on Monday, days only after the Republic’s Attorney General made clear that Hermes airports operator had no right to either clamp or tow illegally parked cars.
The only option private company Hermes has is notifying police in future cases of parking violations, Costas Clerides also said.
Communications and Works Minister Marios Demetriades had to apologise to for his affirmative response to a question before a parliamentary committee whether Hermes Airports had a right to clamp or tow illegally parked cars in Larnaca and Paphos airports.
In a written statement last week, the Communications Ministry said that “under no circumstances” was there a conflict with the AG “whose opinion on the matter is fully respected”.
“The Ministry also apologises for the fact that its response to the question raised by the Chairman of the House communications committee mistakenly did not include the Attorney-General’s opinion on this matter,” added the statement.
Hermes charges a release fee of €85 – a practice it has routinely employed in instances where private vehicles fail to observe traffic laws, even though the police only is authorised to do so.
