Children cause riot in Walthamstow

Officers in the borough of Waltham Forest have increased patrols around the Hoe Street area of Walthamstow following a disturbance in the afternoon of Tuesday 6 October

Shortly after 17:00hrs on 6 October police were called to reports of a large group of children causing a disturbance in the Hoe Street / Station Approach area of Walthamstow.

Officers from Waltham Forest Borough and the Territorial Support Group (TSG) attended the scene.

The group, approximately 200 children, were dispersed by around 20:45hrs.

There are no reports of any persons with injuries at this time.

A Dispersal Order was put in place and officers remained in the area to ensure the group dispersed.

Three people have been arrested – [A] a 16-year-old boy and [B] a 16-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of affray; [C] an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. All remain in custody at east London police stations.

Waltham Forest Chief Inspector Jon Simpson said:

“We are providing additional high visibility policing patrols in the area to reassure local residents and businesses and to ensure that there is no repeat of last night’s disturbance.

“We are working closely with our colleagues at Waltham Forest Council and local schools to identify those responsible for any criminal acts.”

“The vast number of children who congregated in the area yesterday were merely there to watch and film on their phones rather than to participate in any criminal activities”

An investigation into the circumstances of the incident by detectives from Waltham Forest Borough is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
